Laura Clay - La Sierra

$500.00

16” x 20”

Acrylic on Canvas

Born to a Mexican mother and an American father who travelled constantly between their two nations, Laura’s family would often take long road trips between the US and Mexico. She would watch from the car window how the terrain and vegetation would quickly change while crossing state and country borders - from cities to deserts, from ocean to mountains, from English to Spanish. This series can be seen as landscapes in movement and how these travel memories have stayed with Laura throughout the years, including the joys and challenges of living between two worlds.

Artist Bio:

Laura Clay is a Mexican-American artist based in Austin, Texas. Mexico has given her tradition, history and passion. The United States has provided structure, technique and personal ambition. As a Mexican-American, she has both celebrated and struggled with a sense of duality and duplicity. Creating art has allowed her to harness these complimentary and conflicting world views. Laura Clay holds a Masters of Fine Arts degree from Sydney, Australia’s National Art School, where she researched topics regarding the history and psychology of biculturalism. She continues to explore her Mexican-American heritage through abstract painting as a personal commentary on issues of ethnicity and identity. Through her visual art practice, she magnifies the corridors of each of her cultures and the identities tied to each. They show the vulnerable link between Mexico and the United States, the struggle between planning and intuition. There is a constant dialogue between organic vs. geometric, chaos vs. order, fiesta vs. structure. Laura Clay shows her artwork in various national and international galleries and online platforms, where she invites us to see her world thorough her creativity.
